No doubt, the 2011 tsunami was devastating and Japan was amongst the many countries that were severely affected. However four years on and an unusual tsunami related story has been reported…Parts of a Japanese shrine gate known as ‘Torii’ ‘鳥居(とりい)’which was destroyed during the tsunami have found their way across the Pacific Ocean, in the costal state of Oregon, USA!
I came across this remarkable story whist watching NKH World; it was fascinating to hear how a team in Oregon had managed to discover that the torii parts came from a small shrine at a port in Hachinohe City in Japan’s Aomori Prefecture.
Toshimi Takahashi, a local fisherman, and another man, donated the gates to the shrine in 1988. Takahashi had engraved his name on one of these gates, and that’s what helped the guys in Oregon figure out where these unusual looking pieces of red carved wood had came from.
